Physics 507: Classical Mechanics, Fall 2024

Instructor:  Emil Yuzbashyan

Office:  Serin E 270

E-mail:  eyuzbash at physics dot rutgers dot edu

Office hour:  TBD

Lectures: Mondays and Thursdays, 12:10 - 1:30 pm, Hill Center, rm 009 (in the basement)

To benefit most from the lectures, it's best to read the text ahead of lecture. Then, you can ask questions that wouldn't otherwise come up. Don't hesitate to ask questions during and after lectures. Outside of lectures you can always reach me by e-mail.

Text: H. Goldstein, Classical Mechanics, Addison Wesley, 3rd edition, ISBN-10: ‎ 9780201657029

Also consider L. D. Landau, E.M. Lifshitz, Mechanics, Butterworth Heinemann, 3rd edition

Syllabus: My current plan is to cover Goldstein, Chapters 1-6, 8, 9, and 10. If there is a strong interest on your part (let me know), we can cover Chapter 7 (Special Relativity) and/or Chapter 10 (Classical Chaos) and/or Chapter 13 (Classical Field Theory). But then we'll have to skip something, e.g.,  Chapters 4 & 5 (Rigid Body Mechanics).

Exams: TBD (midterm & final or just final)

Grade breakdown between homework and exams: TBD

Homework: See the Canvas page for homework assignments, solutions, and due dates.
